How Divemaster crossovers work with RAID and what you need in place
If you’re a certified Divemaster looking to crossover to RAID, this page explains exactly how that works with RAID UK, what’s required, and what you can (and can’t) do once crossed over. This isn’t complicated, but it does need to be done properly.
This route is for Divemasters who:
Are currently certified with another recognised agency
Want to assist on RAID courses
Are working with (or planning to work with) a RAID dive centre
Are looking ahead to instructor training
If you’re supporting training or guiding dives, this is your path.
All RAID Divemasters must be affiliated to a dive centre. That means:
You can’t assist independently
You can’t operate “freelance”
All training activity must sit under a registered RAID dive centre
If you work with a centre → you affiliate to that centre.
If you don’t → you’ll need to create a RAID dive centre then affiliate yourself to it
Once crossed over & affiliated to a dive centre, you can:
Assist on RAID training courses
Support instructors during confined and open water sessions
Help with student control, logistics, and safety
Build experience toward instructor training
You won’t be teaching courses, but you’ll be an active, recognised part of the training team.
You’ll be walked through:
The RAID Divemaster role and responsibilities
Supervision limits
Student interaction and positioning
Safety awareness and intervention
It’s not a demotion. And it’s not a restart.
Depending on your background, this may include:
Buoyancy and trim
Situational awareness
Problem recognition
Controlled responses to simulated issues
This is about competence and awareness not showing off.

Most Divemaster crossovers include:
Online standards and academic familiarisation
Discussion around assisting scope and limits
Practical evaluation aligned to your level
Clear sign-off on authorised programmes
No guessing. No vague outcomes. You’ll know exactly where you stand.
You’ll need to:
Hold a recognised Divemaster rating
Provide proof of experience and logged dives
Hold current First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen Provider certification
Meet RAID medical requirements
Be affiliated to a RAID dive centre
If you’ve been inactive for a while, that doesn’t block you, it just means a skills refresh may be needed.
Most Divemasters mention the same things:
Clear expectations
Less confusion around roles
Better organisation on courses
Feeling like part of the team, not an extra body
It’s structured, but not rigid.
This page is here so you can understand:
What’s required
How affiliation works
Where you stand
If you’re ready to move forward, the next step is straightforward.
