RAID "Level Up" & "Upgrade" Credits Explained: Progress Your Diver Training for Less

By James Rogers, Owner & Director, Dive RAID UK · Last updated: June 2026

Every diver reaches the same moment. You've finished a course, the skills are locked in, and you're ready for more, more depth, more challenge, or a new environment. The only thing in the way is a myth: that the next certification means starting over, re-reading theory you already know and paying full price to re-cover ground you've already mastered.

It doesn't. RAID's framework is built around progression, and two mechanisms make that progression faster and more affordable, Level Up credits and Upgrade credits. They exist because many RAID courses share what we call skill bridges: overlapping skill structures that mean you should never have to relearn what you already know. This is part of the wider simplification of RAID standards we set out in our 2026 roadmap.

This guide is the definitive breakdown, what each credit is, when it applies, every pathway that currently qualifies, and how to action your next step. Bookmark it. (And yes, if you call the office to ask how to level up, the team will point you straight back here.)

Direct Answer

A RAID Level Up credit applies when two courses share the same manual and quiz, so there's no new theory. You simply add a few new in-water skills, at a reduced price. A RAID Upgrade credit applies when the next course shares strong skill bridges but needs new theory, a new manual, quiz and qualifying dives, yet it's still streamlined and cost-effective because your core skills carry over.

Both only exist between courses with defined skill bridges. Cross into an entirely separate program, like Open Water to Explorer 30, and you'll need full enrolment. To find your exact route, log into your RAID profile or speak to your local dive centre.

Who this applies to

Recreational divers moving up the pathway (e.g. Scuba Diver → Open Water, Explorer 30 → Advanced 35).

Technical divers extending depth or moving to trimix (e.g. Deep 40 → Deep 40 Trimix).

Instructors and dive centres advising students on the most efficient, and most affordable, route. The credits are administered inside the RAID Diver Management System (DMS).

If you’re crossing into a completely distinct program, this guide tells you that too, so you don’t waste a phone call.

What is a “Level Up”? (Same theory, new water skills)

A Level Up applies when two courses share the exact same manual and quiz — meaning there’s no additional theory. The only difference is a few new skills introduced in the water. Because you’ve already mastered the academics, you buy a Level Up credit at a reduced price and focus entirely on the practical application.

The classic example — Deep 40 → Deep 40 Trimix. Under RAID standards, a diver upgrading here simply needs to be 18 years old, purchase the Level Up credit, and complete Deep Dive 4 using helium. That’s it — same theory, one focused dive on a new gas.

The same principle applies moving from Scuba Diver → Open Water.

What is an “Upgrade”? (New theory, bridged skills)

An Upgrade is slightly different. The courses still share strong skill bridges, but the next level requires a new manual, a new quiz, and additional qualifying dives. Because your core skills carry over, you still get a streamlined, cost-effective pathway — you’re building on what you have, not starting again.

The classic example — Explorer 30 → Advanced 35. To bridge this gap a diver must be at least 15 years old, purchase the Upgrade credit, complete the new online academics (presentations, quizzes and exam), finish the confined-water sessions, and complete the Rescue dive and Deep Dive 2 in open water.

Level Up vs Upgrade vs Full Enrolment — at a glance

The deciding question is always: “Same manual and quiz?” If yes, it’s a Level Up. If the academics are new but your core skills carry over, it’s an Upgrade.

Every pathway that currently qualifies

Level Up credits (same theory):

Scuba Diver → Open Water

Deep 40 → Deep 40 Trimix

Upgrade credits (new theory, bridged skills):

Indoor Diver → Open Water

Scuba Diver → Open Water

Explorer 30 → Advanced 35

Explorer 30 → Deep 40 (requires academics + Open Water Deep Dives 2, 3 and 4)

Wreck → Advanced Wreck

One to confirm: Scuba Diver → Open Water appears both as a Level Up example and within the Upgrade procedures as RAID aligns its bridges. Always confirm the exact credit type for your route in your current RAID standards documents or with your instructor before you buy.

Tech divers, this isn’t just recreational

The same logic runs through the technical pathway. RAID’s Technical Diver Standards include a dedicated table that lays out the upgrading process for tech programs. If you’ve been following the renamed technical instructor ratings, Decompression, Advanced Decompression, Normoxic and Hypoxic Trimix, the same depth-based, bridge-driven thinking applies to how you progress as a diver, not just how instructor ratings are titled.

What isn’t covered

These credits only apply to courses that share specific skill bridges. As you progress, you’ll meet completely distinct programs. Open Water → Explorer 30, for example, does not qualify for a Level Up or Upgrade — these are entirely different programs with unique skill sets and very little overlap, so they require full enrolment. That’s not a penalty; it’s a genuinely new set of competencies worth learning properly.

How to action your next step

  1. Log into your RAID profile and open the revised RAID standards documents — every pathway is laid out there in detail.

  2. Confirm your credit type (Level Up or Upgrade) for the exact route you want.

  3. Buy the credit — your instructor processes and tracks this inside the RAID Diver Management System (DMS), where your progression and exam access are unlocked when you’re ready.

  4. Book the water time with your local RAID dive centre or instructor.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the next certification means a full course. Check for a skill bridge first — you may only need a credit.

  • Paying full price when a credit applies. Confirm Level Up vs Upgrade before you enrol.

  • Confusing the two credits. The deciding factor is theory, not depth — “same manual and quiz?” is the only question that matters.

  • Expecting credits between distinct programs. Open Water → Explorer 30 is full enrolment, by design.

  • Forgetting age minimums — e.g. 18 for Deep 40 Trimix, 15 for Explorer 30 → Advanced 35.

Expert tips from the Dive RAID UK office

  • Plan two steps ahead. Mapping your next two courses often reveals the cheapest cumulative route, sometimes the order you take them in changes the credit you qualify for.

  • Let your instructor do the lookup. Every qualifying pathway is visible in the DMS; a 30-second check beats guessing.

  • Treat the standards docs as the source of truth. Bridges get aligned over time, this guide explains how the system works; your RAID profile confirms exactly what applies to you today.

Final verdict

RAID’s Level Up and Upgrade credits exist for one reason: so you spend less time repeating paperwork and more time in the water. A Level Up saves you redoing theory you already know; an Upgrade saves you starting from scratch when the skills bridge. Know which one applies, confirm it in your RAID profile, and your next certification is faster, cheaper and entirely focused on the diving that matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a RAID Level Up credit?
A Level Up applies when two courses share the same manual and quiz, so there’s no new theory. You buy a reduced-price credit and add a few new in-water skills — for example, Deep 40 to Deep 40 Trimix.

What is a RAID Upgrade credit?
An Upgrade applies when the next course needs a new manual, quiz and qualifying dives, but your core skills bridge across — for example, Explorer 30 to Advanced 35. It’s still a streamlined, cost-effective route.

What’s the difference between a Level Up and an Upgrade?
Theory. A Level Up reuses the same manual and quiz (no new academics); an Upgrade introduces new academics but builds on skills you already have.

Do I have to redo the theory to go from Deep 40 to Deep 40 Trimix?
No. It’s a Level Up: same theory. You need to be 18, buy the Level Up credit, and complete Deep Dive 4 using helium.

Does Open Water to Explorer 30 qualify for a credit?
No. They’re entirely different programs with very few overlapping skills, so this route requires full enrolment.

How much do RAID Level Up and Upgrade credits cost?
Both are cheaper than enrolling in the full course. Exact pricing depends on the pathway and your dive centre — check your RAID profile or ask your local centre or instructor.

Where do I buy a RAID Level Up or Upgrade credit?
Through your RAID profile, or via your instructor, who processes and tracks it inside the RAID Diver Management System (DMS).

Do upgrade credits apply to technical diving courses?
Yes. RAID’s Technical Diver Standards include a table outlining the upgrade process for tech programs.

How old do I need to be to upgrade?
It depends on the course, for example, 18 for Deep 40 Trimix and 15 for Explorer 30 to Advanced 35. Check the standard for your specific pathway.

Where can I see every qualifying pathway?
In the revised RAID standards documents inside your RAID profile, where each pathway is laid out in detail.
